Five HWDSB secondary schools have been busy this summer hosting programs that let more than 300 students in grades 7 and 8 “reach ahead” by earning high-school half-credits even before they start Grade 9.
This summer’s two-week Reach Ahead programs have more than doubled in size compared to 2009 attendance. Students can earn half-credits in design technology, physical education and art. They also get a sense of what high school is like.

Roots of Empathy – the social-skills program that turns babies into education’s youngest teachers – is recruiting a new crop of instructors, parents and infants to help reach an estimated 6,500 local students this fall.
ROE is seeking new instructors and parents with infants to visit some of the nearly 80 interested local elementary schools. Lessons involving babies help to reduce student aggression and cultivate positive social skills. Babies must be two to four months old when the program starts... Full Story

Central Public School’s historic clock tower has taken a licking, but by the end of the summer it will keep on ticking.
HWDSB is working with Historia Building Restoration Inc. to return Central’s 76-year-old clock tower to working order. No one is certain when the clock last kept time. But there is plenty of interest in having it fixed.

Two new Superintendents of Education will start at HWDSB in time for the 2010-11 school year. Manny Figueiredo and Mag Gardner are excited to join the Executive Council team, ready to support our vision where all students achieve their full potential.

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is proud to acknowledge students who excel at their endeavours, and that includes those who do so on the athletic field.
HWDSB’s Athletics Department held a recent celebratory barbecue to recognize male and female Athletes of the Year. Schools differ in how they choose the athletes but all have excelled in sport, and have maintained good marks throughout their school career.

When Mrs. Dziuba’s Grade 3 class – also known as Team Dziuba – first heard about the mountain of books they’d read this year, it was a bit like being invited on a hike... up Mount Everest.
“At the beginning, there was a bit of tugging at the reins,” explained Jennifer Dziuba, who has taught at east-end Sir Wilfrid Laurier elementary for three years. “But once they get on board, it is like a runaway train.”
