Yesterday, HWDSB shared messages with students, staff and families to let our school board community know that student social media access will be restricted as of Monday, September 23.

Following this announcement, we received feedback from students and staff regarding YouTube as a platform for student use.

As a result, there will be no changes to students’ current access to YouTube. Students can continue to access YouTube on all HWDSB student devices AND student networks.

Beginning Monday, September 23, student access to

Beginning Monday, September 23, student access to social media will be restricted. Messages have been sent to all students, staff and families so all members of the HWDSB community are aware of the changes. Here are some key details:

• Social media platforms will no longer be accessible on all HWDSB student devices AND student networks.
• Students will NEVER be able to access social media on HWDSB devices. Students using their own devices will NOT be able to access social media while connected to a school Wi-Fi network.
• A list of HWDSB-supported digital tools and a sample list of restricted social media platforms can be found on the HWDSB website.

The actions we take together as a school board community are about co-creating classroom conditions with a continued focus on learning outcomes, safety and well-being. Click the link in our bio for more information.

Applications for the French as a Second Language (FASL) Advisory Committee are now open! HWDSB welcomes submissions from parents, guardians and caregivers with students in Core French or French Immersion.

Grade 7 and 8 students and families are invited to visit their future secondary schools and learn more about HWDSB programs at upcoming Grade 7 & 8 Information Nights!

Students and families were invited to learn about life in secondary school by attending the Getting Ready for High School Virtual Information Session on October 23, 2024. Viewers learned about what to expect in Grade 9, including information about course selection timelines, Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirements and more.

HWDSB elementary schools offer a wide range of learning opportunities to prepare students for success in secondary school and beyond.

The Elementary Focus Programs listed below will be accepting applications for the 2025-26 school year starting Monday, October 28, 2024. Students currently learning in these programs do not need to reapply.

-Hockey Program at Tapleytown
-Mandarin Transitional Language Program/中英文过渡项目 at Cootes Paradise
-Scholastic Arts and Global Education (SAGE) Program at Strathcona
-Scholastic Arts and Global Education Quest (SAGE Quest) at Kanétskare
-Sports Academy (Basketball and High Performance) Programs at R.A. Riddell

French Immersion is a proven way of acquiring excellent language skills in French. The French Immersion program at HWDSB is specifically designed for parents who do not speak French, but want their children to speak both official languages. The program is open to HWDSB students starting in Grade 1.

Applications for Grade 1 entry into French Immersion are only accepted through the online application form. The link to the application form will be posted to the French Immersion page linked above on October 28, 2024.
