Focus On Youth

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is supporting Summer Programs across Hamilton for the 2010 summer.

Funding has been approved by HWDSB and the Ministry of Education to assist non-profit groups deliver summer activities to keep young people safe and active.

The objective of Focus on Youth Hamilton is to enhance high quality summer program opportunities for children and youth in Hamilton by offering free use of school space for organized community-based programs and by providing employment opportunities and leadership activities for the youth of these communities. The FOY program will promote learning through play, healthy lifestyle and positive self-image for children and youth of these communities.

Summer Literacy Program

Summer Programs:

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board’s Summer Literacy Program is back and better than ever. Students are invited to take part in the program running from July 5th, 2010 to August 13th, 2010. The Program focuses on literacy, providing participants with engaging modeled, shared, guided, and independent reading and writing activities. The Program is FREE with parents being asked to provide a lunch for their child(ren).

It is proven that children who attend our program maintain and improve their literacy skills.

Along with literacy initiatives, students are given the option of different afternoon program choices including:

Sports and Games – Students can stay active this summer with sports like floorball, basketball and soccer.

Visual Arts – From creative crafts to digital photography, there are a variety of options for your little Picasso.

Drama – Get the acting bug scratched with activities like movie making and play writing.

Music – Making the band HWDSB style; students learn to play the guitar, the recorder, and expand their vocals.

Dance – Learn the moves with the dynamic dance team.

Computers – Students are taught new applications and are given the chance to create digital masterpieces while they learn about the ever changing computer world.

Please have the sign up forms in no later than June 16th. Space may be limited so early sign up is encouraged. Note that the program is open to primary/junior students in HWDSB currently in grades K – 5.
